Landfill Operations Will Change July 15
As part of its effort to cut costs while still maintaining a reasonable service level the Board of Commissioners included cuts to the landfill budget for the fiscal year which began July 1.
The landfill lost more than $190,000 last year which is something the county cannot afford to continue, according to the announcement from County Manager Greg Wood.
The hours for the general public will be changed effective July 15. The hours will be Thursday and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The goal of these hours is to meet the needs of the average household for weekend projects that may need to get rid of excess household items or yard trimmings. There is no change to what can be taken to the landfill.

For commercial operations that have larger loads, appointments can be made for drop off Monday through Wednesday by contacting the Public Works Department at 706-468-4910.
Another reason for the change in hours is because of work that needs to be done at the landfill that will take approximately two years to complete. That work could interfere with routine operation of the C & D landfill, said Mr. Wood.
However, there is good news too. Recycling operations will be expanded to cover plastics and paper which could not be dropped off before. This service will be expanded by the end of July. Also don’t forget that Fire Stations one, Jackson Lake, and three, Monticello, have receptacles for aluminum cans, proceeds from the sale of which help fund the volunteer fire department.
For more information, interested persons may contact public works or the county manger, 706-468-4900. The landfill may also be reachd, when it is open, at 706-468-4917.
