Concert, Boat Parade Highligh Holiday Here

Independence Day, July 4, is next Monday, and although there’s been no report of a local fireworks display, there will be the traditional patriotic band and choral concert and boat parade here.

The concert, featuring the Monticello Community Band and Chorus, will be held at the headquarters of the Jasper County Historical Foundation, 319 College Street, outside on the lawn. Everyone is invited to bring a picnic and enjoy a meal at 6 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m. There will be a table decorating contest with prizes in three categories.

The boat parade on Jackson Lake will feature all kinds of boats, decorated in red, white and blue showing their patriotism. Some will be quite extravagant, if years past are any indication. It can be viewed from land at Martin’s Marina off Jackson Lake Road.
The Monticello News office, like most business and government offices will be closed Monday. Since Monday is the deadline for all news and advertisements, everyone is asked to submit items early, preferably by 5 p.m. tomorrow, July 1 or sooner.

Late news and ads will be taken until noon Tuesday, July 5, but to assure your item makes it in the paper it’s best to submit early.
Items can be e-mailed through the website, www.themonticellonews.com, or to individuals such as editor@themonticellonews.com or advertising@themonticellonews.com. In addition, the answering machine will be on all weekend, and there is a slot in the door where items can be submitted.

There will be no mail service on Monday, and both local banks will be closed. City, county, state and federal government offices will be closed, however emergency services will operate as usual.
Some retail outlets will have special sales, and many will close. As usual on a holiday, it’s wise to call ahead before visiting a business to be sure it’s open.
