Metal Thieves are Caught

On June 16 deputies and investigators with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) arrested Michael Shane Baker, 36, of Covington, and Shanna Marie White, 28, of Conyers, after they were found at a property on Cason Road where metal had been reported stolen several times before and tracked as sold to a recycling center in Newton County. A surveillance camera had also shown Mr. Baker’s vehicle entering the property on previous occasions.

Mr. Baker has been charged with theft by taking and three counts of criminal trespass, and remains in the Jasper County Jail.
Ms. White, charged with theft by taking, criminal trespass, possession of marijuana less than one ounce and possession of drug related items has been released on a $13,000 property bond.

In a separate incident on June 14, deputies patrolling Hwy. 142 in Shady Dale stopped a speeding vehicle, which was searched with the driver’s consent, and approximately one-half kilo of cocaine was discovered hidden in the trunk area. As a consequence, Antonio Yolundos Frances, 33, of Lithonia was arrested and charged with trafficking in cocaine.

During the arrest attempt Mr. Francis resisted by striking the officers and attempting to gain possession of one of their weapons. After being tazed, Mr. Francis was also charged with two counts of felony obstruction of an officer, and remains in the Jasper County Detention Center without bond.

Also, during the period of June 15 though June 21, the JCSO reported the following criminal activity:

•On June 21 a resident on Alcovy North Drive in Mansfield reported the theft of a 2007 Sea Ray Boat, orange life jackets and a neoprene life jacket.

•On June 20 a resident on Hawks Trail in Newborn reported the theft of five gallons of gas.

•On June 20 a 12 volt battery was reported stolen from a farm on Hwy. 142 in Shady Dale.

•Also on June 20 a business on Hwy. 142 in Shady Dale reported the theft of cargo trailer and 34 other items.

•On June 20 a resident on Herds Creek Road in north Jasper County reported the theft of a Goodman outside air conditioning unit.

•On June 18 a resident on Hwy. 11 in Mansfield reported the theft of a Honda dirt bike and a snapper mower.

•On June 18 a resident on Blue Heron Drive in Alcovy Shores reported the theft of a door.

•On June 15 the Turtle Cove Clubhouse in Turtle Cove reported the theft of Textron EZ Go golf cart and wooden shed doors with pad locks.

•On June 14 a resident on Herds Creek Road reported the theft of a Lexmark safe.

In addition, during the period of June 14-21, the JCSO reported these arrests:

•Nicholas Standifer, 21, Monticello—Grand Jury Bench Warrant.

•Melissa Michelle Lisvey, 29, Monticello—disorderly conduct, criminal trespass and probation violation.

•Lisa Dean Maddox, 47, Monticello—disorderly conduct.

•Joseph Brett McDaniel, 27, Monticello—probation violation.

•Jeffery Lee Hardy, II, 21, Oxford—contributing to the delinquency of a minor, interference with custody and probation violation.

•Michael Perry Dorsey, Jr., 23, Newborn—DUI and tail light violation.

•Jesse Dale Riley, 36, Rex—probation violation.

•Jesse Alan West, 18, Monticello—Jasper County Superior Court Bench Warrant.

During this same period deputies with the JCSO responded to 131 calls for service.

During the same period the Monticello Police Department (MPD) reported the arrest of Ben Lee Waddy, 39, of McDonough, and charged him with DUI and failure to maintain land and speeding.

Officers with the MPD, during the above mentioned period, responded to 47 calls for service including 20 stopping suspicious person/vehicle, three each alarm trouble unknown and music/noise complaint.
