Spring Football Game Is this Friday

The ‘Canes began spring football practice on May 9, and the two week session will close this Friday, May 20 with a “Purple and White” game to be played at Rose Bowl field with action scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m. Admission to the game will be $3.
Spring practice allows the coaches 10 days to work with returning players and to also evaluate the performance of new players.
Head Football Coach Eddie Roberts said he is looking forward to a senior class that will return over 20 players, including many who have started for several years.
Coach Roberts also said, “We have made tremendous strides in the weight room this past year and are looking forward to our spring practice and the 2011 football season. Our practice will culminate with the game this Friday, and we encourage everyone to come out and support the ‘Canes as they compete and prepare for the upcoming season.”
The ‘Canes will be playing the same schedule as last year this fall season, however there will be some changes next year since the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) recently passed its most radical legislation in more than 10 years, voting to expand from five to six classifications to divide the state’s 433 member schools for athletic competition, effective in July of 2012.

There is mass confusion over the “hypothetical” classifications and regions that were provided as a demonstration on how it might look. That was based on old student enrollment numbers. No one will really know how the schools will be divided into the six classes until the new full-time enrollment reports in October.
At that time the GHSA will divide schools into six classes, and members will have two weeks to apply to play in a higher classification. In mid-November, each classification will be divided into eight regions, with schools permitted two weeks to appeal. By early December, the classification committee will issue a proposal to be voted upon and ratified by the full board in January 2012.
Coach Roberts also announced that he and his football staff will be hosting the first annual Hurricane Youth Camp this summer from June 13-16.
The camp will be from 8:30 a.m.-noon and will emphasize fundamentals of football combined with a punt, pass and kick competition, and flag football games.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the contests. Guest speakers will emphasize character building and some members of the high school team will be assisting with the daily activities.
The cost is $50 and is open to ages eight through 13. Interested parties should contact Coach Roberts or Assistant Coach Buddy Cain at the high school for more information and a registration brochure.
