Piedmont Boys Fall in Soccer Playoffs

The 2011 season came to a disappointing end for the Piedmont Academy boys soccer team last Friday.
The Cougars fell 3-1 to visiting Robert Toombs as the young Piedmont team couldn’t find enough offensive firepower to keep up, at least on this night.
“We started the game with three eighth graders in the lineup and would eventually have four before it was over,” coach Dwain Landress said. “They were very physical and bigger than us. They got in our heads.”
Trailing just 1-0 at halftime, Landress said he believed his team could still rally in the second half.
“We had just as many chances to score as they did, but we were never able to find a finisher all season,” Landress said.
Bobby Mitchell’s goal would tie the match but Robert Toombs answered and that seemed to deflate the Cougars.
“Overall, it was a good season,” Landress said. “I never thought we would finish in a three-way tie for first, especially when you consider our youth. It is a good sign for the future.”
Sam Cleary and Rhett Roberts are the team’s seniors.
