Mrs. Mary Lou Johnson
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lou Johnson, who died April 21, 2011, were held Wednesday, April 27, at Freedonia A.M.E. Church in Monticello. Rev. Willie Card officiated; burial was in Mt. Olive Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was a native of Monticello, born March 19, 1918 to the late Major Alexander and the late Mary Lou Morgan.
“Mother” Johnson was a faithful member of Freedonia Church. She received numerous awards from the church—Mother of the year, May 1993; Spiritual Guidance Award, December 2003; 88th birthday, March 2003; and the 70-Plus Club, Golden Years, 2008. She also was a member of the Morning Star Lodge #12, Hillsboro. Mrs. Johnson loved cooking and sewing.
A son, Willie Wise; sister, Millie Jackson, and four brothers, Jim, Sam, Roy, and Johnny Alexander, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her caretaker, Mary Lou Pope; two grandsons, Jerry Pope and James Wise, both of Monticello; special granddaughters, Yesheka Trust, Katronia Banks, and Latasha Pope; a sister, Julia Ann Lumpkin of Stone Mountain, 13 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
