Eulady Clemons Thomas

Funeral services for Eulady Clemons Thomas, who died April 26, 2011, were held Saturday, April 30, at Springfield Baptist Church in Monticello. Rev. Jimmy Horton officiated; burial was in South View Cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Jasper County on September 2, 1910 to the late Gabriel and Lula Clemons. She received her education in the public school system in Jasper County. Continuing her education, she attended Tuskegee University in the field of teaching, and graduated from Ft. Valley State College with a bachelor of science degree in education.

She taught in Adgateville and Monticello for more than 42 years including teaching adult education. She believed every child should have the right to an education, and that’s where she made the difference. She enjoyed teaching whatever it was, public school or Sunday school; she acquired many plaques and certificates for her work.

Church was one of her passions: singing, praying, teaching Bible school and sometimes a little preaching. She joined Adgateville Baptist Church at an early age. After moving to Monticello, she joined Springfield Baptist Church where she became part of the deaconess board and secretary of the church. Because of illness, the position had to be relinquished. She truly loved God and loved doing his work. Before computers, Mrs. Thomas helped many people get birth certificates so that they could retire from their jobs.
She was married to the late Abraham Thomas.

Her sister, Savannah of Mansfield, Ohio, Lula, of Buffalo, N.Y. and Louisiana of Monticello; and brothers, Alonzo, Gabriel Jr., and Joe, all of Mansfield, Ohio preceded her in death.
Survivors include Margie, Eugene, Sheila and Clint, along with several other relatives and friends.

Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
