Diamond Cougars Ready for State
The young Piedmont Academy baseball team will have the chance to grow up some when it competes in the GISA Class AA state tournament today, May 5, at Robert Toombs in Lyons.
Coach Danny Camp’s team claimed the No. 4 spot from Region 1-AA and will begin the best-of-three series with a doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m. A third game, if necessary, would be Friday at 2 p.m.
“We know they will be athletic,” Camp said. “Obviously, winning their region shows they are a good team. However, we know if you can get to this point then anything can happen.
“I feel we will be prepared after playing teams like Brentwood, Gatewood and Windsor. Hopefully, that level of competition will benefit us in the playoffs.”
The Cougars closed out the regular season with a 17-4 loss to region foe Gatewood and an 8-0 loss to Class AAA Loganville Christian.
“It’s big for us to be able to get into the playoffs,” Camp said.
“After our first 10 games, I knew it would be tough. We are glad to have the No. 4 spot. It will be good for our younger players to have this chance and we will look to our four juniors who have been there before to lead us.”
