R100 Archery Shoot Attracts 100s to Jasper County

Hundreds of people will visit Jasper County this weekend for the R-100 archery shoot to be held at the disc golf course at the Jasper County Recreation Department, 246 Ted Sauls Road, off Hwy. 212 outside Monticello.
The local event is expected to attract archers from throughout the southeast and perhaps further. The next closest events are in Tampa, Fla. in May and in Staunton, Va. in June.
At the event, participants have the opportunity to shoot 50 targets a day. They don’t even have to score the targets to have a chance at winning $6,000 in door prizes.
Targets vary from anteaters to zebras and everything in-between, said the organizers of the Rinehart R-100. “Some competition, and 100 outrageous, silly, and downright scary targets,” the R-100 website says.
Recreation director Wes Chester explained how it works. Groups, usually of four, will go from “hole” to “hole” on the disc golf course, but it will not be baskets at each hole, it will be targets.
Once the foursome finishes a hole, it moves to the next one. There are 18 holes on the disc golf course, and the holes will feature more than one target. How many targets are in each place will be determined by how much space is available.

Deer Capital is the local sponsor, and Adam McGinnis said that there will be two courses—a North American course and an African course. Archers can determine which one to shoot.
Internet pre-registration was to end last night, and on-site registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Archers can shoot one day or both days.
The competition classes include open unlimited, hunter men’s, hunter women’s, traditional men’s, traditional women’s, youth 11-14, and Cub (10 and under). R-100 pins will be awarded for all scores over 1,000 points.
A Darton bow is offered as the first prize in the Darton Steel Challenge, and entry fee is included in the R-100 registration fee. For 100 targets, adults will pay $45 at the event, and couples will pay $70. Youth will shoot for $20, and children under 15 are free. Fees are less for those only shooting 50 targets.
Anyone can take part in the shoot, and refreshments will be available. More volunteers are still needed. Anyone wanting more information on the shoot may go to the website, www.r100.org. For more information on how to help, contact Mr. McGinnis, 770-337-5430.
