‘Cane Tennis Teams Headed for State

The Lady ‘Canes tennis team traveled to Morgan County last week and secured third place in the Region 4-AA Tournament, which qualified them to advance to the state tournament.

After defeating Putnam 3-0 and losing to Pike 3-0, the team bested Lamar 3-2 to secure third place. It was a long day for the team beginning at 10:30 a.m. and ending at 5:45 p.m.

In the number one singles Emily Hallas won 6-4 and 7-6, while the number two and three singles lost. In the number one doubles Amy Labriola and Keosha Warren won 6-5, lost 0-6, and won 6-3. In the number two doubles Gabriel Bautista and Katlan Needham won 6-4, 6-4.
Head Tennis Coach Paul Stokes said, “The girls played well in the heat and several matches went to tie breakers making it a very long day, but the team played well even in the loss to Pike.”

The girls were scheduled to travel to Savannah for the first round of the state yesterday, April 20, too late to report in this edition.

The boys’ team played a consolation round for third and fourth place, lost 3-1 to Pike, and ended up in fourth place in the region, which earned them a trip to Brantley County for the first round of the state tournament. They are scheduled to play today, April 21 at 1 p.m.

Coach Stokes said, “Every match except the number one single went to the third set and we played them real close. This is the third year in a row the girls and boys teams have made it to the playoffs.”
