‘Canes Play Tough vs. Pirates

The region first place Pike County Pirates came to town Tuesday sporting a 9-0 region record, and averaging scoring 15 runs a game.
The ‘Canes, with an 0-5 region record were decidedly underdogs, but rose to the occasion. The final score was 6-4 in favor of the Pirates, but the ‘Canes held the game to a 1-1 tie through the third inning, and led 4-2 after four innings.
Shane Pulliam took the loss but scattered seven hits including two home runs while recording four strike outs. Pulliam was backed up by outstanding defense including a line drive catch by freshman third baseman Dustin Womack, and three catches by right fielder Jonathan Bell.

The ‘Canes got on the board in the first inning when A.J. Thomas hit a drive to the gap and knocked in a run to tie the score, 1-1. Womack singled in the bottom of the second when he knocked in another run to tie the score 2-2.
The ‘Canes took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth after Womack hit another single, Bell walked, and Travis Fields got on with a bunt single to load the bases, and Dee Chapman knocked in two runs with an infield single.
The Pirates tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run shot, and went on to score two more runs in the top of the sixth, which won the game 6-4.
Chapman led the hitting with two singles and two RBI, followed by Thomas with two doubles and an RBI, Womack with two singles and an RBI, Kevin Camp with a double, Bell with a single and a walk, Fields and Patrick Clements both with singles, and Brady McMichael with a walk.
The ‘Canes are scheduled to continue regional action this Friday at Northeast Macon, and this coming Monday at home versus Southwest Macon.
