Piedmont Falls in Finale
The Piedmont Academy basketball teams wrapped up the regular season Friday facing Covenant Christian on the road in Macon.
The boys dropped a 47-31 contest while the Lady Cougars fell 35-28. Piedmont entered play in the Region 1-AA tournament this week. (See related story, page 15.)
Bobby Mitchell led the Cougars with 11 points Friday night while Jakey Dunagan added seven and Alex Hall finished with six points.
“The game didn’t mean a great deal in terms of seeding for the region tournament,” said coach Josh Daher. “We had some different things we needed to work on. The game helped us because we got better in some areas.”
Trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Piedmont boys could only manage four points in the third quarter as Covenant pulled away late.
Tyler Cullum finished with four points while Peter Lawson added two.
“Covenant is a solid team and is well coached,” Daher said. “If you make mistakes against them they will run you out of the gym.”
The Lady Cougars were led by the usual one-two scoring combination of Hailey Burnham and Rachel Maletz. Burnham scored 12 points while Maletz finished with 10.
Piedmont led 16-11 at halftime but Covenant outscored the Lady Cougars 18-4 in the fourth quarter.
Carley Cain, Heather Tyler and Kacy Swart each finished with two points.
