‘Canes Wrestle in Red Skin Rumble

The Monticello ’Canes traveled to the Social Circle Invitational Wrestling Match Saturday for a competition that included 13 teams.
The ’Canes managed to finish in fourth place behind Morgan County, Alcovy and Eastside of Covington. Morgan is ranked in the top five in the state and won the Region 4AA championship, and Alcovy and Eastside both wrestle in the AAAA classification.

Head Wrestling Coach Andy Rewis said, “We wrestled well and we had five wrestlers place in the tournament. And in the finals we had Nick Tarleton at 112 pounds, Patrick Clement at 140 and Oscar Sandoval at 160, all three finished as runner’s up in second place. Brian Harper at 145 and Brandon Barger at 171 placed fourth.”
Earlier last week the team traveled to Covington for matches with Alcovy and Cedar Shoals, both AAAA teams, and managed to get a split by beating Cedar Shoals, leaving them with a current team record of 42-16.

The team was scheduled to travel to Rutland Tuesday, too late to report in this edition, for a match versus Lamar, where it will be senior night.

The team’s two seniors, Patrick Hutchinson at 130 pounds and Blake Bell at heavyweight, will be honored.

Coach Rewis said, “Both Patrick and Blake are original members of our team and both played a big part in our program.”
This Saturday, February 10, the team is scheduled to travel to Morgan for the Regional Individual Tournament, with action getting under way at approximately 9 a.m.
