Evaluate for the New Year

This is the season for change. Time to change how we plan to live our lives in the New Year; time to change our personal goals; time to rid ourselves of old habits and times to adopt new ones.

The most daunting and uncertain of the time for change will come in the form of the change expected in the governance by our newly elected leaders.

The flurry of activity we witnessed during the last days before the holiday showed us how time and change go hand in hand and serve as a wonderful motivator for our elected leaders to get the job of the people’s business done.

We may not agree with all of their decisions but it was refreshing to see business being done and it was revealing to discover how petty and unbelievably unreasonable some of our officials (both parties) are in ‘their party line quest’ to get the people’s business done. The people are not always the winners under this scenario.

All of that activity made me want to see two of America’s classic movies – “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” and “The Christmas Story.” I wanted to see the former because of the goings on in our nation’s capital and take in its meaning as it relates to the state of our country right now and the latter because I wanted to see it with new eyes.

Both classics depicted a time when we were a more hopeful and tolerant country while also dealing with the unsavory actions of others, and America’s undeniable can-do spirit prevailed in the end.

We’re now overwhelmed with the implementation of psychological games that ‘persuade and coerce’ us to act and react to stimuli based on our own personal fears of change and play into the hands of those manipulating the change and the timing of the change.
How can we get out of the mess we’re in if we don’t work together as a people for the better good of the people?

The time has come for us to re-evaluate our interpretation of the values and perceived notions of our founders for our form of government – democracy.

The time has also come for us to reclaim some of the old fashioned values designed for us as a people who are proud of and want to take care of our country. If we didn’t live in a democracy and had no freedom and rights, would we want to take the time to bring about change?
I’m just sayin…’
