The Change You Want to See
The media has awesome power in our 21st Century high tech world!
Tools allow us to influence when we tweet, blog, launch websites, and connect with hundreds of thousands via social networking sites.
That technology, guided by the youth of our future, has made an everlasting impact on entire countries. The Power of the Media!
People wanting but never believing change was possible rallied together and their mass protests in the street launched change and for that action, this revolution will forever change the face of the Middle East.
“Be the change you want to see in the world,” Mahatma Ghandi said decades ago. We see the Egyptian people demanding (sans any ugly rhetoric) change in the oppressive rule of law that governs them, and it is admirable and fascinating to watch as they commit themselves to changing the future for their youth.
They want change—change that will give them basic fundamental rights as human beings. Rights their government does not recognize or grant. A beautiful, cultural history filled country, unfortunately, exemplifies what blatant ruling of the Haves against the Have Nots looks like.
I acknowledge the basic human nature of the precept but I’m just saying that Egypt represents an example of the type of government that I worry we are headed for.
Would you accept not being able to have a choice in the basic rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness if we lived under that type of rule of law?..I didn’t think so.
This media, cultural and world phenomenon reminded me of the following song by the Beatles, circa 1968:
You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it’s evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don’t you know that you can count me out
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
all right, all right
You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We’d all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We’re doing what we can
But when you want money
for people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
all right, all right
You say you’ll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it’s the institution
Well, you know
You better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain’t going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
all right, all right
