Piedmont Boys Drop Two Over Weekend

After five wins to start the season, the Piedmont Academy boys basketball team fell in a pair of weekend contests.

The Cougars were defeated by Covenant 44-25 Friday before falling to John Milledge 63-19 Saturday. For coach Josh Daher, the games were simply part of the learning process for his team.

“We’ve made some improvements learning the offense,” said the first-year head coach. “We are getting the Xs and Os down, but need to keep working on fundamentals. We’ve been getting some practice time in now but we actually need a break. Many of our players came in right off of football season and now need some time off.”

In Friday’s game, Piedmont fell behind quickly trailing 13-5 after the first quarter and 24-12 at halftime. Bobby Mitchell was the leading scorer with 11 points followed by Peter Lawson with five and Jakey Dunagan with four. Nick Dimsdale and Alex Hall both scored two points while Justin Wilson added a free throw.

The Cougars were overmatched Saturday against AAA John Milledge. Dylan Collins and Mitchell both scored six points for Piedmont while Wilson added five and Lawson scored two. Cody Wood led the Trojans with a game-high 20 points.

“I am not disappointed with where we are at,” Daher said. “We haven’t had a great deal of time to work on fundamentals.”
The Piedmont Academy Lady Cougars defeated Covenant 38-29 Friday behind 14 points from Hailey Burnham. Piedmont led 10-7 after the first quarter and 18-14 at halftime.

“It was great to get off to a good start in our first region game,” coach Wes Tanner said. “The win took a lot out of us, however, and it showed the following day.”

The Lady Cougars held an eight-point lead after the third quarter before taking the nine-point win. Rachel Maletz and Heather Tyler both finished with eight points while Jordana Pope scored six. Carley Cain added two points in Friday’s victory.

Burnham scored 12 points in the loss to John Milledge Saturday.
“We used a lot of energy in Friday’s game and didn’t have much left in the tank,” Tanner said.

The Piedmont Academy teams will return to action Thursday, Dec. 30, against Flint River, in Woodbury.
