Nigel Kevon Griffey

Nigel Kevon Griffey, 13, of Monticello, died November 24, 2010.
Mr. Griffey was born Decmeber 17, 1996 to the late Alice Louise Goolsby and Kelsey Griffey.

Nigel was an eighth grader at Cousins Middle School in Covington. He was aspiring to attend Morehouse College.

In 2001, he was the Little Mr. Clark Atlanta University representing the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Mr. Griffey was an active member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Monticello. He was on the DVD recording staff, Liturgical reading, Youthful Praise Chorale, Acolyte (Candle Lighting Ministry), and Children’s church. Mr. Griffey was also the youngest attendee of the Men’s Bible Study Group which meets each Thursday.
Mr. Griffey traveled extensively with the Youthful Praise singing throughout Georgia and other states.

He played baseball each year with the Newton County Recreation Department. He also attended many games at Piedmont Academy, and wore his ‘P’ cap frequently.

Mr. Griffey was preceded in death by his grandmother, Dolly J. Goolsby.

Survivors in addition to his father include brothers, Jared Isaiah Goolsby, and Kelsey Griffey, Jr.; grandmother, Shirely Griffey; grandfather, Norris I. Goolsby; grandmother, Christine Blackshear; great-grandmother, Jannie Mae Battle; along with a number of extended family members and friends.

A service, in conjunction with his mother’s, was held Saturday, Dec. 4, with Pastor Donna Marie Calix, officiating.
Mr. Griffey and Ms. Goolsby were killed in a car wreck in Jasper County on Thanksgiving eve.

Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
