Fitzhugh Lee Penn, Jr.
Fitzhugh Lee Penn, Jr., 87, of Ocoee, Fla., died Saturday, December 4, 2010, at the Winter Park Memorial Hospital in Winter Park, Fla.
Mr. Penn was born in Monticello to the late Fitzhugh Lee Penn, Sr. and Vera Evans Penn. Having grown up in the family newspaper and printing business, Mr. Penn’s family was the former owners of The Monticello News. He graduated from Monticello High School and Georgia Tech, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters aboard USS LST 1001 as Communications Officer, Executive Officer, and finally as Commanding Officer. He retired from SKF Industries, Inc.
After retirement, he hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and did volunteer work along the trail and in the community. Mr. Penn was a member of the River Oaks Presbyterian Church in Lake Mary, Fla. and a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. After moving to Florida to be near his daughter, he enjoyed volunteering at his grandsons’ elementary school.
His sisters, Ammie Ree Penn and Josephine Penn Owens preceded him death.
He is survived by his wife, Betty King Penn of Winston-Salem, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mark Adelhelm of Orlando, Fla.; sons and daughter-in-law, David Penn of New York City, N.Y., and Timothy and Robin Penn of Golden, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Dan Adelhelm, Drew Adelhelm, and David Adelhelm, all of Orlando, Fla.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Jordan Funeral Home. Interment will be held at West View Cemetery. Rev. John Montgomery will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service Friday at Jordan Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010 at 4 p.m. at River Oaks Presbyterian Church, 385 Washington Avenue, Lake Mary, Fla. 32746.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the River Oaks Presbyterian Church, 385 Washington Avenue, Lake Mary, Fla. 32746, where he was a member, or to Appalachian Trail Conservancy, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. 25425.
