Mat Canes Begin Action Today
The ’Cane Wrestling Program gets ready to begin its third season under Head Wrestling Coach Andy Rewis today with an inter-squad match scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the high school.
They’ll see their first competitive action tomorrow, Nov. 19 in Milledgeville at 5:30 p.m. versus GMC and Southwest, and have their first test at home next Tuesday, Nov. 23 versus Crawford County, Jones County and Jackson. Action in these matches begins at 2 p.m.
Coach Rewis returns a veteran team including two seniors, 13 juniors and nine sophomores, and seems to be poised to make a run at a region title. Seven freshmen have also joined the team.
The Middle School ‘Canes, under Coach Paul Stokes, opened their season with an impressive showing at the Oglethorpe Invitational last weekend with three individual champions, one second place finisher and one fourth place finisher in the following weight classes:
•Herman Bautista, first place at 125 pounds.
•Chase Helms, first place at 195 pounds.
•Tyler Seawright, first place at 215 pounds.
•Tyler Pitts, second place at 165 pounds.
•Chris Anglin, fourth place at 205 pounds.
The team will compete in an intra-squad match at the high school today at 5:30 p.m., and will travel to Athens Christian this Saturday, Nov. 20.
