Cougars Return to Work Friday
The No. 1-ranked Piedmont Academy football team will return to action Friday hosting Robert Toombs at 7:30 p.m.
For coach Rhett Farmer, it will be another in a stretch of Region 1-AA contests and one which holds just as much importance.
“They are very explosive offensively,” Farmer said. “In watching them on film, they have hurt themselves with penalties at time. Their quarterback is as good of a runner as we will see all year.”
The Piedmont coaching staff was able to scout Robert Toombs in person last week since the Cougars were off. The Crusaders enter Friday’s game in Monticello at 4-3 overall having lost to Edmund Burke 47-20 last week.
Justin Brinson, who triggers the Robert Toombs offense, will operate out of the shotgun with three or four wide receivers. Brinson is a true running threat, however, as Farmer said he is as strong of a runner as you will see.
“If you blink, he can beat you,” the coach said.
One win by Robert Toombs which impressed Farmer was a 31-27 victory against Gatewood in September.
“Defensively, they use a 4-4, but we’ve also seen them in a 5-3 lately,” the Cougar head coach said, who scouted this week’s foe in person last Friday.
The off week from competing was beneficial for Piedmont last week as Farmer and his coaching staff were able to allow several players to rest and heal from various injuries.
“It was a good week to get healthy,” the coach said. “We’ve got three tough games in a row. We’ll have to go one by one and cannot be caught looking ahead. Robert Toombs would love to come in here and play spoiler.”
The Cougars are 7-0 and have averaged more than 46 points per contest while allowing just over 17.
Kickoff at Cougar Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
