New Meters

Monticello Mayor Glenn Newsome watches Dave Smith with Central Georgia Underground change out a meter as part of Monticello’s change from manual meter reading to automated meter reading.

Central Georgia Underground is one of the companies involved in the meter conversion. The city is in the process of a $766,000 project to upgrade or replace 1,400 water meters, 1,200 gas meters, and 1,400 electric meters.

The purpose is to replace all of the older meters and to install a radio read device on all the meters. In the future, city workers will be able to read all of the meters using a radio receiver while driving by the property.

It will be quicker and more accurate than the manual read, and will allow the city to do a better job of maintaining its billing schedule.
