‘Canes Drop to 0-6 After Loss

Ellis Ammons Makes Tackle

The Monticello Hurricane football team suffered its sixth straight loss of the season last Friday when they were defeated by Southwest Macon 16-0.

Head Football Coach Eddie Roberts said, “It was a defensive battle on both sides of the football, and the game basically came down to turnovers once again. We fumbled on their two yard line and on their 15 yard line, both key turnovers that hurt us. The one on the two yard line was picked up and run down to our 20, and that’s how they scored their first touchdown.”

The ‘Canes only had 133 yards rushing from three running backs. Coach Roberts said, “They are a strong football team on defense and haven’t given up much yardage to anyone. We just didn’t get it done as a coaching staff and as a team. We had a total of four turnovers, three fumbles and one interception.

“Our defense did play well, we stood up and held them inside our own territory three times.”

Traditional rival Putnam County, 5-2, is scheduled at home tomorrow night. They are tied at the top of the region with Lamar County at 4-1.

Coach Roberts said, “They are a multiple I team and show a lot of multiple formations on offense. On defense they run a four, five or six man line, play a lot of man coverage and are very active. They only beat Southwest 7-6 earlier in the season, so we feel like we can compete with them, we just have to eliminate the mistakes.”

The coach also reported several nagging injuries, but most devastating, that both quarterbacks, Brady McMichael and Dee Chapman, were questionable for the game. As far as who would be playing the position he said, “We’ll find a new quarterback this week.”
