Softball Cougars Advance to Final Four
The Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team has advanced to the Class AA Final Four.
Coach Danny Camp’s team swept Brentwood Wednesday in Sandersville to reach the semifinals for what is believed to be the first time in school history. The Lady Cougars won the first game Wednesday 8-6 before closing out the series with a 10-2 victory.
“We look forward to continuing our season and seeing what happens,” Camp said after Wednesday’s doubleheader.
Piedmont is one of four teams from Region 4-AA to reach the Final Four along with Gatewood, LaGrange and Flint River. The Lady Cougars will play LaGrange at 10 a.m. Monday in Dublin with Flint River and Gatewood facing off at 11:30 a.m.
The teams will play a double elimination formation until two teams remain. The best-of-three finals will then be the following Saturday, also in Dublin.
“I am proud of them,” Camp said. “We played really well. We did the little things you need to do in order to win. We really picked a good time to play well.”
Camp and Piedmont softball statistician/historian Carole Tyler believe this is the first time in school history a team has reached the Final Four. This includes when the school played slow-pitch before moving to fast-pitch. Camp said the 2001 slow-pitch region championship team did not reach the state semifinals.
“We still have a long way to go but once you get to this point anything can happen,” Camp said.
