Lady Cougars Stumble

The Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team dropped a 6-3 region game to LaGrange Tuesday afternoon meaning the Lady Cougars will all but likely finish third in region play.

Trailing 2-0, Piedmont responded to take a 3-2 lead before host LaGrange put four additional runs on the scoreboard for the victory.

“We really hurt ourselves,” said coach Danny Camp. “We have to do a better job. It’s hard enough to give a team like LaGrange three outs in an inning, much less five.”

Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Lady Cougars defeated Nathanael Greene 9-0 Monday afternoon. Kacy Swart earned the win to improve her record to 2-1. Hailey Burnham and Heather Tyler both worked an inning.

Burnham had a double and a triple at the plate, driving in three runs. Brittany Germany had three RBI.

This past Saturday Piedmont hosted an afternoon of fast-pitch action with Gatewood, Arlington and Loganville Christian taking part. The Lady Cougars competed against Loganville Christian and Arlington.

In a Saturday morning game with Loganville Christian, the Lady Cougars fell 6-3 after falling behind 4-0 after the first two innings. Piedmont outscored its opponent 3-2 the rest of the way, but could not recover from the early deficit.

“We didn’t show up,” Camp said. “We were lackluster the first two innings and it showed. We can’t get in an early hole. We simply can’t do that the caliber of teams we face. You can’t give a team four and five outs an inning and expect to win.”

Tyler and Swart were both 2-for-4 in the contest.
Later in the day, the Lady Cougars went toe-to-toe with defending state champ Arlington. While in the end, Arlington took a 1-0 win, Camp was much more satisfied with how his team performed.
Carla Martin allowed just two hits pitching what Camp termed “an excellent game.”

“She made them put the ball in play and our defense was strong,” the coach said. “I am proud of the way we played in this one after playing poorly earlier in the day.”

Martin did not allow a walk and the one run scored was unearned.
Last Thursday, Piedmont defeated Heritage on the road in Newnam 15-1. Destiny Walker had a huge day offensively with a grand slam and two doubles.

“Destiny is getting hot at the plate at the right time,” Camp said. “Her first two hits went off the fence and then she sent it over with no doubt the next time.”
Burnham was also 4-for-5 with two RBI last Thursday.
