Deer Capital Plans Advance

All hunters who have been successful in Jasper County are invited to join Deer Capital, a group of hunters, landowners, business people and others who are interested in promoting Jasper County as the Deer Capital.

Deer Capital will hold its annual Whitetail Classic on Saturday, Oct. 2 on the Monticello Square, where successful hunters will display their mounts. In addition, certified scorers will be on hand so persons who want to get an accurate Boone and Crockett score for a deer may bring it to the Square that day.

The group, which has been in operation for two years, elected board members recently. They include Adam McGinnis, Scott Kelly, Bubba Greer, Jeremy Knight, Rob Alexander, Barry Hooper, Matt Thompson, Jimmy Whatley, Brent Galloway, Grant Dutton, Chip Benton, Billy Bryant, Shannon Whitener, and Greg Atkinson.

The vision of the group is to promote good quality whitetail deer herds through unique management practices with hunter and landowner cooperation. The group is raffling off two guns, and the winning ticket will be drawn at Deer Festival, Nov. 6, or possibly sooner if they are all sold before then.

In addition the group is sponsoring a bug buck contest. The award will be given at the Whitetail Banquet which is set for January 21. Check stations are set up around the county for board members to score bucks.

As the Deer Capital vision comes more fully into view, businesses and others in and around Jasper County can capitalize it. Tourists may come because of our reputation. Hunters may seek us out. It is hoped that local businesses will prosper from the effort.

The first big event for Deer Capital this year is the trophy wall. Hunters who want to know more should visit the website, www.deercapitalga.com. They are invited to share their stories and photos on the site.
