GP Lays Off 40 People

Georgia-Pacific has indefinitely curtailed operations at its plywood plant in Monticello, according to Melody Ruse, a spokeswoman for the company.

Some 60 employees were working in the plant which used to employ hundreds, and of those 60, only 20 will remain.

Ms. Ruse said the remaining staff will maintain the facility and power the boilers which provide service to the Middle-Density Fiberboard (MDF) plant and the stud mill. Those plants are not affected. She said the curtailment at the plywood plant had already taken effect.

The plant in neighboring Madison is not affected, said Ms. Ruse. She said the shut down was caused by economic conditions, and if the economy improves, the Monticello plant would be back in business.
