Big Mess

There’s something about hay on fire…it sometimes takes it a while to get going, and it is often hard to extinguish.
That was the story last Wednesday, Aug. 25 when Cynthia Presley of Stockbridge, driving a truck pulling a trailer with a load of hay realized her load was on fire. She pulled over, on Hwy. 16 west of Monticello, but was unable to unhook the trailer on her own.
Finally, a friendly passerby stopped and helped her get it unhooked from the truck. Meanwhile firefighters arrived and started putting the fire out. By then there were little fires all over the place where bales of hay had fallen and caused flames to erupt.
It took some time to get the fire extinguished and the road cleared again for traffic. The driver of the car who called it in said the hay had been smoking since the vehicle went by Ingles in Monticello, and it pulled over about where Hwy. 16 meets Bethel Church Road. No one was injured. After the fire was extinguished, Ms. Presley expressed her appreciation to the people who helped her.
