Middle School Cougars Stay Busy

Recent days have seen the Piedmont Academy Middle School baseball team stay very active as coach Wes Tanner’s squad has tied Flint River (6-6), defeated Heritage (11-5) and Briarwood (17-2), split a double header with Griffin Christian (4-3 loss and 9-4 win) and defeated Community Christian 14-1.

“It was a very up and down week as far as performance goes,” Tanner said. “We played well against Flint River and Heritage. Flint River is by far the best team we have played all year and we had some chances to put that game away and were just unable to do it.”

The coach said Zach Beggs had a “great pitching performance” against Flint River and the team played “pretty solid defense at times.”

Hunter Knox helped lead the offense. In the win against Heritage, Piedmont trailed 4-0 before the offense came to life. Austin Taylor and Luke Andrews helped lead the effort while Knox pitched effectively with Malcom Tyler being effective in relief duty.

Alex Parish earned his first win of the season against Briarwood. Tanner said the doubleheader contest against Griffin Christian was probably his team’s least enthusiastic performance of the spring.

McKenzie Brittan pitched well enough to win in game one, the coach said, but the offense was lacking and the defense struggled.

“It was a tough one to swallow knowing that we had our chances to put that game away,” Tanner said. “I give Griffin Christian plenty of credit for fighting and scratching that win out.”

The Middle School Cougars were able to get back on track in the nightcap with Luke Andrews going the distance and the offense generating enough runs to pull out the win.
“These two games taught us that we cannot take any opponent lightly and that anyone can be beaten on any given day,” Tanner said.

Beggs earned the win against Community Christian with Taylor working solid innings in relief. The team has been off this week for spring break.
