Turnovers Doom Hurricanes

The ‘Canes lost their first region game of the year last Friday night to Southwest Macon 27-14, giving them a 0-1 region record and a 2-2 overall record.
Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jimmy Hughes said, “We turned over the ball six times. We got a fumble and two interceptions from them, but that still left us three short of what they got from us.
“Most of it was our own doing instead of what they forced. We were guilty of not protecting and not being careful enough with the ball. We put ourselves into a 21-0 hole in the first half. But I was proud of the kids for coming out in the second half and scoring a touchdown.
“Then they got the ball back and scored, then we did the same. It was a highly competitive game once we finished giving them the ball. They didn’t do anything we didn’t expect, their size just paid off for them. We were smaller than them, but we did fight them hard. They dressed out 78 players while we dressed out 33.
“Defensively we didn’t do a bad job even though we had 27 points scored on us. We just had to play on our end of the field most of the time because of the turnovers.”
This Friday night the ‘Canes travel to Greene County to face a 1-3 team which only lost by a touchdown to Lincoln, by two touchdowns to Washington County, and also a close physical game to Putnam last week.
Coach Hughes said, “They won’t be the biggest team we’ve played, but they are extremely fast, and they have a junior player, Sam Bradford, who plays several positions for them who is an outstanding player.
“They are kind of in the same situation as we are in that they only have so many kids they can play. We had a great game with them last year at Rose Bowl Field, which we lost in overtime. We’re looking forward to another good game with them and I’m sure it will be a close one.”
The JV is scheduled to play Hancock Central today, Oct. 1, at 5 p.m. at Rose Bowl Field.
The Middle School team was scheduled to play yesterday.
