PA Varsity Lady Cougars Off to Fast Start

Piedmont Academy’s varsity softball team added another win Tuesday afternoon and continued its quality start to the 2020 campaign.

The fast-pitch Lady Cougars defeated visiting Robert Toombs 13-1 in four innings. Piedmont had 15 hits in the contest.

Haley Ann Frank led the offensive attack with four hits while Marissa Holder and Jayden Young both had two. McKayla Arnold, Abby Arnold and Fleming Sealy all drove in two runs.

Abby Arnold recorded the win working all four innings striking out three batters.

The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and closed the game out with six more in the fourth.

Piedmont also hosted Georgia Force Christian for a Saturday doubleheader. Piedmont won the first game 7-2 before the teams fought to a 14-14 tie in the nightcap.

In the win Holder, Maddie Waddleton and Abby Arnold each had two hits to help lead the offense. Frank drew two walks and Sealy drove in three runs.

Averi Camp pitched the first four innings before Emily McEwen closed the game out. Camp recorded one strikeout.

The Lady Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the first before adding runs in the second and third innings. Piedmont pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the fourth before scoring their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In game two, Georgia Force led 7-1 after two innings before the Lady Cougars answered with eight runs in the top of the third. Piedmont added a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning but Georgia Force rallied with a run in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh.

The teams combined for 27 hits in the second game on Saturday. Kylee Keck and Holder both drew a walk. Frank drove in three runs while Sealy had two RBI.

Arnold worked five innings in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Cougars and recorded two strikeouts.

Frank (three hits) and Ellie McCart (two this) were part of the offensively firepower for the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Cougars opened the new season with a 20-13 home win against Loganville Christian Academy last week behind a 21-hit performance. LCA also had its share of offense crossing home 13 times with 17 hits.

Abby Arnold helped lead the offense for Piedmont with four hits and also drove in six runs. Sealy (four RBI) and Waddleton (two RBI) also had big performances offensively for Piedmont (1-0).

Arnold also worked five innings in the pitcher’s circle before McEwen pitched the final two innings. Arnold had four strikeouts while McEwen had one.

The first inning was an indicator of how the game would play out. LCA jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the top of the first inning but Piedmont answered with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The visiting Lady Lions added four more runs in the top of the second inning while the Lady Cougars pushed two runs across in their half of the frame.

LCA added a run in the third and two more in the fourth while Piedmont scored four times in the third and three more in the fourth inning. The Lady Cougars then added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Lady Lions had three errors in the contest while Piedmont committed four.
