Daisy Belle “Blossom” Malone Henderson
Daisy Belle “Blossom” Malone Henderson, 97, of Monticello, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at the Manor Care Potomac in Potomac, Maryland.
Mrs. Henderson was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. Her parents were the late Randolph Augustus Malone and Daisy Belle Kingman Malone. At the age of 19, she married the late Charles Lee Henderson, Jr., also of Monticello.
“Miss Blossom” was a loyal and active member of the Monticello Presbyterian Church for 77 years and was the organist for the church for much of that time. She was a self-taught bookkeeper for her late husband’s many businesses in Monticello, including the Henderson Cold Storage Company. When her husband, Charles, died, she traveled extensively, gardened, and volunteered in many community activities.
Since this didn’t fill her time, she talked her way into a part-time job assisting in the dental office of Dr. Tom Brady. Mrs. Henderson is also remembered for her long walks begun as therapy after a very serious automobile accident. She never stopped walking, and in her 80s, these walks often took her to The Retreat, where she helped at lunch hour.
With assistance from devoted sitters, she was able to stay in her beloved house, which Charles had built for her during the Depression, and then the Retreat. This summer, she moved to Washington, D.C., to be near her daughter, Betty.
Brother and sisters Randolph Malone, Elizabeth Palmer and Ann Ballard, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughters, Elizabeth “Betty” Joyce Henderson Lindsay of Cabin John, Md., and Mary Ann Henderson Johnson of Concord, N.C.; grandchildren, Lee Ann Wittenstein, Joseph Wade Lindsay, Robert Andrew Lindsay, Daniel Clay Johnson, Laura Elizabeth Smith, and Charles Malone Johnson; and great-grandchildren, Rebecca Emily Wittenstein, Gregory Joel Wittenstein, Joseph Quilhot Lindsay, Alison Somers Lindsay, Margaret Henderson Lindsay, Ann Clay Smith, William Heard Smith, Anna Elizabeth Johnson, Abigail Lucinda Johnson, and Sarah Amanda Johnson.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Monticello Presbyterian Church, with burial in church cemetery.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Joseph Wade Lindsay, Robert Andrew Lindsay, Daniel Clay Johnson, Charles Malone Johnson; and great-grandsons, Joseph Quilhot Lindsay, Gregory Joel Wittenstein, and William Heard Smith.
The family suggests donations be made to the Monticello Presbyterian Church Elevator Fund, PO Box 308, Monticello, GA 31064.
Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
