MS Cougars Shut Out Wesminster Lions

How much did last week’s season opening win mean for the Piedmont Academy Middle School football team?
Perhaps coach Wes Tanner’s statement summed it up best: “Man, did it feel good.”
The Cougars defeated Westminster 16-0 at home as the 2009 season began in strong fashion for the Piedmont team.
After the first quarter, the Cougars led 16-0 and then held on in a game which turned into a defensive struggle.
In the first quarter, Piedmont had touchdown runs from Gaven Edge and Hunter Knox and a two-point conversion with Mills Smith connecting with Payden Cantera.
“Defensively, we really buckled down,” Tanner said.
The Piedmont coach said interceptions from Edge and Smith and a fumble recovery by Malcom Tyler helped keep Westminster scoreless.
“I am extremely proud of the way the boys came out and put last year’s struggles behind them and got the job done,” Tanner said.
“Now that we have the monkey off our back, we can focus on stringing some wins together and having a great season. We have several areas that we have to continue to get better in and I confident that we will be able to do that as the season goes on.”
The Middle School Cougars will travel to Siloam today, Sept. 3, for a 6:30 p.m. contest against Nathanael Greene.
