Cougars Learn A Lot in Scrimmage

Scrimmaging against the most storied program in the GISA, the Piedmont Academy football team was able to learn a good deal about itself last Friday afternoon.

The Tattnall Square Trojans, king of the hill in Class AAA for more than two decades, ventured to Monticello for a preseason scrimmage and left first-year Cougar head coach Rhett Farmer with plenty to examine.

“We moved the football well at times,” said Farmer, a former Tattnall assistant. “We did find out we need to get more physical. I’m not sure why we weren’t more physical. It may have been the heat.”

At times, the Piedmont offense looked in mid-season offense, including a 60-yard run when both teams had their first units in.

“We have got to get in better shape, Farmer said. “Our defense played well in spots. We scored once; they scored twice. However they had more depth and we scrimmaged a good hour and a half in the heat. We are a long way away. We have to get much better to be anywhere close to where we desire to be. It’s early and we played like it.”

The Piedmont coaches and players were set to watch the film of the scrimmage Monday afternoon before returning to the practice field.
