Baseball ‘Canes Win Two of Three
The ‘Canes suffered a loss this past Friday to region rival and first place Howard, 12-1.
The loss dropped their record to 6-2 in region play and left them all knotted up in a tie for third place. Ethan Huff, who shut them down in a prior game, took the loss on the mound.
“Head Baseball Coach Chris Jenkins said, “We left too many pitches over the middle of the plate and they hit them. Their pitcher was as good as any we have seen and we were very undisciplined at the plate.”
Prior to that game the team defeated region foe Greene County, 13-2, at home. Ace Colby Byrd was on the mound to extend his record to 6-0.

Coach Jenkins said, “We began by playing small-ball due their good pitching. We had to be patient and bunt guys over, and had three successful squeeze bunts in the first three innings before our bats came alive.”
Prior to this game the team picked up a non-region win versus Glascock County 25-10 in a five inning mercy rule ending. Dee Chapman was on the mound and got the win. Coach Jenkins said the 10 runs given up were due to the team making more errors than they have in the past four games combined, but their bats saved them.
In spite of the 10 runs scored against them, the team has still scored 78 runs in its last five games while only giving up 27.
Coach Jenkins said, “If we can take care of Henry County and N. E. this week we could be right back in the driver’s seat to reclaim second place. Another thing we have going for us is that Henry County hasn’t played Howard yet. They still have to face them twice.”
The team was scheduled to play N.E. Macon in a double header at home Tuesday, and also face Henry County Wednesday at home.
