Baseball ‘Canes Pick Up A Region Win at Home

The Baseball ‘Canes managed to get one game in before Spring Break, and it was a big region win when they bowled over Central Macon 12-2 in six innings at home last Friday.
Head Baseball Coach Chris Jenkins said, “The win was over a team that is expected to challenge for the region title, a team which has allowed just over three runs a game in region play.

“We talked all week about landing the first punch instead of waiting for the other team to hit us in the mouth, and it paid off when we scored three runs in the first inning. Ethan Huff and Clint LaVaughn both singled to lead off the inning, and both scored on a single by Colt Spivey. We came right back and scored two more in the second inning on a two run double by Xavier Chapman, picked up three more in the third on a double by Cody Arnold, and led 8-0 after three innings.”

Huff led the hitting by going 4-5 with four RBIs, while LaVaughn went 3-4 with three RBIs. Also, Cody Arnold hit a three-run double and Xavier Chapman had a two-run double.
Coach Jenkins said, “Defense was impressive in all aspects of the game. Ethan threw a complete game, allowing only two runs on four hits and throwing just 79 pitches. Tony Davis, in his first varsity start of the year, made a couple of key plays at second base. Anytime you have a pitcher who throws strikes and has a defense behind him playing error-free ball, you are going to put yourself in a position to win the game, no matter the opponent. That is exactly what we did in this game.

“Hopefully the boys will realize what they are capable of when they put all parts of the game together for seven full innings. If they do, we’ll be the ones pushing for a region title, as opposed to fighting for a third or fourth seed.”
The ‘Canes are scheduled to be back in action at home tomorrow, April 10, versus S.W. Macon at 4 p.m.
