Elementary Cougars Are Undefeated

The Piedmont Academy elementary school football team capped its 2007 season Saturday with a 6-0 win against Flint River. With the victory, the Cougars finished the season undefeated in their classification.

“The most memorable thing I will take with me about this season is how well these boys came together as a team,” said coach Jason Beggs. “They looked out for each other and were eager to learn. This was a great group of boys and coaching them was the easy part.”

The Piedmont elementary team also competed in the John Milledge jamboree recently and emerged with two wins. Coach Beggs’ squad recorded victories against Gatewood (18-0) and Brentwood (28-8).

Twelve schools competed in the event in Milledgeville including Piedmont, Brent-wood, Trinity, Prince Avenue, Thomas Jefferson, Edmund Burke, Gatewood, West-minster Christian, Nathanael Greene, Flint River, Briarwood and host John Milledge.

In the first game against Gatewood, the Cougars held a 6-0 lead with approximately a minute remaining before halftime. Piedmont then quickly moved down the field using its arial attack to move in front 12-0. The defense did the rest in the second half to preserve the victory.

Against Brentwood, the Cougars faced a new opponent for 2007.

“They were bigger than us and that had me worried,” Coach Beggs said. “They stuffed us on our first possession and marched down the field and scored. We challenged our defense and that was the last time Brentwood saw the end zone.”

Beggs said his team’s offensive line had an outstanding game blocking. In addition, strong effort from the offensive backfield contributed in the 28-8 win.
