‘Canes Fall 42-7

The Monticello Hurricanes took another beating, 42-7, last Friday night in Warrenton at the hands of the 7-1 Warren County Screaming Devils, ranked number seven by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC).

It was the last game to be played on the old Warren County field, which was reminiscent of a scene from the 1960s with its cow pasture parking lot, dim lights and wooden bleachers. The Devils will play their next home game in a brand new stadium.

The Devils established their dominance on their first two possessions by marching down the field to score on each and led 14-0 by the middle of the first quarter. Then after two exchanges of possession they broke a 60 yard run for another touchdown, missed the extra point, but led 20-0.

The hapless ‘Canes fumbled the ball over on their second play after the kickoff. The Devils took advantage of the field position and completed a 35 yard pass to a wide open receiver for a touchdown, ran the ball in for two points on the extra point attempt, and extended their lead 28-0 with almost eight minutes still remaining in the first half.

After the next kick off the ‘Canes didn’t wait until the second play and fumbled the ball away on the first play, which a Devil defender picked up and ran into the end zone. The extra point kick was good and the Devils led 35-0.
After receiving yet another kickoff the ‘Canes picked up their second first down of the game, the first one having come via a penalty, but were forced to punt on the next series.

The ‘Canes finally showed a spark on defense and forced the Devils to punt on two consecutive possessions, both aided by two big sacks by Caleb Reynolds just before the first half ended.

The 35-point-lead-mercy-rule caused the clock to run continuously during the second half. The Devils put one more on the board making it 42-0 before making substitutions.

The ‘Canes finally put a drive together and Brad Lynch ran it in from the Devil 10 yard line for a touchdown. Darius Colvard booted the extra point to make the final score 42-7.

The loss puts the ‘Canes at 1-6 overall and 0-4 within Region 7A. The team does have an opportunity to redeem themselves down the stretch when they face Twiggs, GMC and Aquinas, three teams with a combined overall record of 4-17.

The Twiggs County Cobras come to town tomorrow night for the last home game of the season. It will also be homecoming and senior night. The Cobras have an overall record of 4-3 and 3-1 in the region, however, two of their region wins were at the expense of GMC and Aquinas.

Athletic Director and Head Coach Jimmy Hughes said, “Twiggs has a fine team and will run a winged T on offense. They’re pretty good at it, and they’ll primarily run the ball and only pass when you put them in a position where they need to. But most of the time they want to run the football. They have a good set of backs and a good quarterback along with an above average offensive line.

“Defensively they’ll run a five front and an four front. They are a lot like some of the other teams we’ve played in the last few weeks in that they’re real fast. They are extremely aggressive toward the football so we’ll have our hands full trying to move the ball.”

The coach summed up the injury situation. “Caleb was back last Friday and he played very hard. It did him and some of our other players some good to see him back out there. Lance has been cleared by the doctor to start working, but I’ll be surprised if he plays this Friday. DeJeneiro still has some stitches in his face but I think his ankle is fine. J.C.’s ankle seems to be pretty much well.

“It will be a big night because besides being home-coming, it’ll also be senior night. Hopefully we’ll have some good weat
