Sarah Meredith Splawn
Funeral services for Sarah Lee Meredith Almond Splawn are planned for Friday, Oct. 12 beginning at noon at Hill Street Baptist Church in Asheville, N.C.
The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct special services today, Oct. 11 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Ray & Allen Funeral Home located at 127 McDowell Street in Asheville, N.C.
She died October 8.
Mrs. Splawn was born August 29, 1931 to Charlton and Sarah Elizabeth Lawrence Meredith in Greensboro. The family later moved to Atlanta. She attended David T. Howard High School and received training and certfiication in food service, preparation and catering services from Smith Technical School.
She was married to the late Melvin Almond, Sr. and Robert Splawn, Jr.
Mrs. Splawn attended Turner Monumental A.M.E. Church and Second Olive Baptist Church, both in Atlanta, Nazareth Baptist Church and Hill Street Baptist Church, both in N.C.
During her 30 years of service at Hill Street she served as vacation Bible school teacher, president of the Senior Missionary Society, seinor choir member, served with Feed the Hungry Program, Women’s Day Committee, and Keenagers.
She also served with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the Eastern Star Daughters of the Esther Chapter 128.
Mrs. Splawn had been employed with the Atlanta Public School System, Taylors and St. Joseph Hospital in Asheville and the Buncombe County Child Development.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Paul Almond; four siblings, George, James, Charlton, and Georgia Mae Meredith.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her daughter, Melissa Gail Almond Horton of Atlanta; son, Melvin Almond, Jr.; grandchildren, Nichole Horton Daniel, Karah and Amber Almond, and Jeremiah Almond; great-grandsons, Aaron and Timothy Daniels; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Ray & Allen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
