Man Arrested for Assault

Antonio Dewayne Dumas of Monticello was arrested by the Monticello Police Department last week and charged with assault of an unborn child, a felony.

Mr. Dumas was also charged with simple battery and obstruction of an officer.

According to official reports the victim stated she was seven months pregnant and that Mr. Dumas was the father of the unborn child. The victim also claimed that while she was sitting in a chair and in the midst of an argument with Mr. Dumas, he pushed her backwards off the porch causing her to slam to the ground on her back.
A witness stated she observed Mr. Dumas push the victim out of the chair to the ground.

The law ‘assault of an unborn child’ is often referred to as the ‘Laci and Conner’s Law’ because of the laws that resulted after the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn child on the west coast several years ago.

On April 2, 2004, President Bush signed the ‘Unborn Victims of Violence Act’ making it a crime to harm a fetus during an assault on a pregnant woman.

In other crime related information, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests for the period October 9-16:

•Jeffery Alan Custer, Monticello—failure to register as a sex offender.

•Jason Mathew Greenway, Shady Dale—obstruction of an officer, open container, driving on a suspended or revoked license.

•Ricky Daniel Still, Locust Grove—hold for state pickup.

•Melanie Gale Durham, Stockbridge—probation violation.

•Colin Derek Savage, Jackson—probation violation.

•Victor Frank Grier, Jenkinsburg—license violation, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer.

Also, during this period deputies with the JCSO served 10 warrants and 20 civil processes. They conducted 29 traffic stops resulting in three warnings and 26 citations and responded to 174 calls for service including six deer accidents, six burglary, four music/loud noise three theft by taking, three juvenile complaint, two fight, and one child abuse/molestation.

During this same time period the MPD made the following arrests:

•Saul Vargas Bautista, Monticello—driving with no license and no insurance.

•Robert Whidby, Monticello—probation violation.

•Andy Mark Carter, Monticello—public drunk.

•Jeffery Lewis Carter, Monticello—shoplifting.

•Alray Leon Goolsby, Monticello—Magistrate Court Bench Warrant, damaging/interfering with government property.

•Charles Edward Lynch, Monticello—public drunk.

•Willie Nelson Benjamin, Monticello—shoplifting.

•Eric Cassell Hagans, Eatonton—hold for warrant in Marietta.

•Edie Lamar Taylor, Eatonton—probation violation.

•Lusion Antionnette Barron, Eatonton-probation violation.

•Jennifer Amanda Hall, Hillsboro—simple battery, criminal trespass.

In addition, during this period the MPD responded to 107 calls for service including 24 stopping suspicious person/vehicle, five accidents, four fights, three juvenile complaints, two burglary, one theft by taking, and one attempted suicide.

Furthermore, during this period the Georgia State Patrol reported the following arrests:

•Tyrone Thurman, Monticello—DUI, speeding.

•Kenneth Browning, Jr., Rut-ledge—driving on a suspended license.
