Lady Cougars Drop Four Close Ones

Several close games all went against the Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team in recent days.

The Lady Cougars were involved in four close outings, but fell in each one. The team will look to regroup today when it travels to Eatonton to face rival Gatewood in a 4 p.m. contest.

Piedmont dropped a 5-3 decision to Briarwood in a home game Tuesday afternoon. Jennifer Mobley, Emily Beckham and Randi Small each scored runs for the Lady Cougars. Small was also credited by coach Nick Prezioso for playing a solid defensive contest.

Last Saturday, Piedmont dropped a doubleheader to LaGrange 5-0 and 2-0. In the opener, Alisha Bassett was the tough-luck loser allowing just two hits while striking out three. Four of LaGrange’s five runs were unearned as throwing errors proved costly for the Lady Cougars.

Bassett also provided the only offense for her team.

In the second game, Carrie Tucker also pitched well but an extra base hit in the third inning proved to be the difference. Lacey Howell had the lone hit for Piedmont.

In another close game last Thursday, the fast-pitch Lady Cougars fell 4-1 to Brentwood. The Lady Eagles scored all four runs in the first inning but did not cross home for the remainder of the game.

After a shaky first inning, the Piedmont defense settled down and played solid for the remainder of the contest, Prezioso said.

Small was 2-for-3 at the plate while Priscilla Jones scored the team’s lone run.
