‘Canes Defeat War Eagles, 26-12

The ‘Canes defeated the Class AA Putnam County War Eagles last Friday evening at Rose Bowl Field to even their season record at 1-1.

The game was tied at 6-6 at half time and the ‘Canes were behind 12-6 at the end of the third quarter, but they scored 20 points in the fourth quarter and won 26-12. It was the team’s first victory over the War Eagles in three years.
According to Athletic Director and Head Coach Doug Huff, the win came as a result of ball control.

“We pretty much controlled the ball on offense, and for the most part played good defense. We missed a few tackles, but not nearly as many as last week. We got better in that area, and offensively, we should have scored at least two more times. We fumbled on their one yard line and also on their 15 yard line. But we did play better all the way around.”

The first score came as a result of a 45-yard TD pass from Quarterback Markese Thurman to receiver Brad Lynch in the second quarter. The remaining three all occurred in the fourth quarter on a one yard pass from Thurman to tight end Caleb Reynolds, a 15-yard run by Justin Brown, and a 50-yard interception return by Zaybo Jackson.

The ‘Canes travel to Athens tomorrow night to play the undefeated Athens Academy Spartans, who in their first two games defeated Oglethorpe County 20-14 and Mt. Pisgah 30-8.

Coach Huff described the Spartans as being a team with size that plays hard. “It’ll be a tough game, particularly since we have to go over there to play. They are probably not as athletic as the past two teams we’ve played, but they are very disciplined and they will go after us for 48 minutes, I promise that.”

All games begin at 7:30 p.m. The estimated driving time to Spartan Stadium from downtown Monti-cello is one hour and 15 minutes, and the distance is estimated at 63 miles.

The directions are as follows:
•Take Hwy 16 east for 16 miles.
•Turn left onto US 129 North and continue for 20.7 miles.
•Turn right on US 129 East Bypass and continue for 4.2 miles.
•US 129 Bypass East becomes US 129 North, continue for 21.3 miles.
•Turn right on Spartan Lane and go one-half mile to stadium.
