‘Canes Fall To Social Circle
The Varsity ‘Canes traveled to Social Circle last Friday and lost their opener in their new classification, 35-19.
Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Doug Huff summed up the loss when he said, “You simply cannot turn the ball over six times and beat someone. And that’s what we had, six of them, and they did a good job of capitalizing on the turnovers by scoring as a direct result of four of them.
“Defensively we missed tackles. On the first two series they had the ball we had seven or eight missed tackles. We were in positions to make them but didn’t. And you can’t do that, particularly against a running back like they have.
“With six minutes and 41 seconds to go in the first quarter we were down 21-0, and it would have been very easy for us to lay down and lose by a large score. But we fought back and got it to 21-13, and we were driving again in an attempt to tie it up when we had another turnover.
“So I was proud of the team for fighting back and not quitting when we were in a situation where that would have been easy to do. They fought hard, played hard and didn’t give up.”
Another non-region game is scheduled at home tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. versus the Putnam War Eagles from Eatonton.

Coach Huff said, “They have a good running back returning from last year, and Putnam always seems to play their best against us. We just have to take care of the football and make tackles to beat them.”
Young ‘Canes
The Junior Varsity ‘Canes coached by Coaches Chris Jenkins, Brook Adams and Scott Brantley, play their season opener today at approximately 4:30 p.m. at home versus the Twiggs County Cobras.
The Middle School ‘Canes coached by Coaches Mike Johnston, Michael Williams, Andrew Smalley and Steve Spruell, began their season last Wednesday, Aug. 30, with a 20-0 loss to the Greene County Bulldogs at home.
However, the team played tough and held the Bulldogs to only one first down in the first quarter. In the second quarter the ‘Canes fumbled on their own 15 yard line setting up Greene’s first TD. A failed extra point attempt made the score 6-0. Late in the first half the Bulldogs broke a 45 yard run for another TD, missed another extra point and led 12-0 at the half.
With 1:22 left in the third quarter the Bulldogs scored again, went for two points on the conversion, made it, and went ahead 20-0, which was the final score.
Turnovers and lack of a running game by the ‘Canes determined the outcome, however, four complete passes from the quarterback to the tight end showed promise, and several good defensive plays and stands kept the ‘Canes in the game until they ran out of time.
The team was to play their second game last night at Social Circle, too late for the results to reach this edition of The News.
