Hurricane Football Season Begins Friday
The Varsity ‘Canes scrimmaged the Ola Mustangs, a new high school with a AAA classification in McDonough, last Friday in an attempt to sharpen their skills prior to the season opening game.
Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Doug Huff seemed to think his team’s effort was very good. “Defensively, while the varsity crew was in there during the first three quarters, Ola’s longest run from scrimmage was only seven or eight yards. So I was very pleased by the way the run defense played. And overall there was really only one busted play by the defense when we didn’t cover on a long pass in the secondary. The first time we were scored on was an 18 yard run after we turned the ball over. The second time was when their receiver just went up and took the ball away from our freshman corner back.

“Offensively, we had far too many turnovers and we have to take better care of the football. As long as we had the ball we moved it and they really didn’t stop us. But we played two inexperienced quarterbacks and we just turned the ball over too many times. We did score two touchdowns when Alex Jordan made a 20 yard run and Justin Brown also ran one in from 25 yards out.
“I was surprised by the performance of some of our younger players, the ones without any varsity experience. I thought they all really did a good job. When we look at the film we see that their effort was good on both sides of the ball.”
The practices, scrimmages and the drills are all over and it will be the real thing tomorrow night when the ‘Canes travel to Social Circle to take on the Redskins at 7:30 p.m. in their first game of the season. It will also be their first game in their new region (7-A).
There was a meeting between the two teams last year and the ‘Canes prevailed 21-14, however the Redskins went on to win their region (8-A), and went two games deep into the playoffs.
A victory in their first game would be a good way for the ‘Canes to start a winning tradition in their new single A classification.
In order to accomplish this goal, Coach Huff said, “We have to do two things to win: We have to take care of the football on offense and we have to stop number 22, Marcus Williams, their
All-State running back. He was the leading rusher in single A last year and they’ll probably hand the ball to him at least 30 times. They have a big offensive line and they like to run behind it. So we’ll have to beat their blocks up front and not miss any tackles.”
Coach Huff concluded by saying, “We’re going to show up and play hard tomorrow night. Everyone can count on that, and we appreciate all the support we can get.”
To get to the Social Circle football field from Monticello, take Hwy. 11 North; go under I-20 and continue into downtown Social Circle. After passing the Blue Willow restaurant on the right, take the second street to the right which is A.P. Henderson Drive. Continue across the railroad tracks, and the field will be on the right.
