Piedmont Football Practice Begins Monday
After months of off-season workouts, drills and preparations, the Piedmont Academy football team will begin official on-the-field practice next Monday.
Third-year coach Danny Camp said earlier this week his team would return to the practice field Monday with an evening practice. Aug. 7 is the first day practice is allowed by the GISA.
“Our summer workouts continue to go well,” Camp said. “We are excited and ready to get to work (at practice) for the new season.”
Camp said his players would continue with their summer workouts this week.
“Summer workouts make it easier for you when you return to practice,” the coach said. “We are really excited about the new season. Once we start, it’s going to be full steam ahead until the season is over. We play 11 regular season games this year without an off week.”
Camp said it was his decision to play an extra regular season game. Valwood was looking for additional opponents this fall and Camp signed his Cougars up for a contest with the Valiants.
“We felt we needed to play another opponent and the better teams we compete against, the better we will be,” Camp said.
The Piedmont players will have one week of pre-season practice before school begins. The first day of class is set for Aug. 14 at which time practice will move to its customary after-school starting time.
The Cougars are also set to compete in a pre-season jamboree hosted by John Hancock Academy in Sparta Aug. 24. Piedmont has a tough pre-season opponent in Brentwood as the two teams will meet at 8 p.m. Aug. 24.
“Brentwood is always tough, but that will give us a good look at where we are the week before the regular season,” Camp said.
Piedmont opens the 2006 season against Nathanael Greene Sept. 1.
