Sarah Burney Smith
Funeral services for Sarah Burney Smith, 99, of Monticello, were held Monday, July 17 at St. James A.M.E. Church with burial in Smith-Thomas Cemetery. The Rev. Donna Marie Calix officiated.
She died Wednesday, July 12.
Mrs. Smith was born August 1, 1906 to the late Hattie and Waymon Burney of Monticello. Fondly known to many as “Miss Sarah,” she lived her entire life in Jasper County. A hard working wife and mother, her hobbies included cooking, fishing, flower gardening, and crocheting. She found joy in sharing her artistic creations.
Mrs. Smith was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church where she served as stewardess and missionary. At the time of death, she was the second oldest member of the church congregation.
Her husband, Frank J. Smith; three sisters; and three brothers, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her children, Howard A. Smith of Monticello, Hattie S. Smith of Bloomfield, Conn., Dorothy Johnson and Frances Smith, both of Monticello; granddaughters, Avis M. Smith of Bloomfield, Conn. and Tracie S. Wheaton of Lithonia; great-grandson, Paul Samuel Wheaton of Lithonia; five sisters-in-law; and numerous other relatives and friends who adopted her as their own.
Pallbearers and flower bearers were her nephews and nieces.
Smith & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
