Sex Offender Is Arrested

Lemonth D. Reaves, a registered sex offender in Jasper County, is incarcerated in the Jasper County jail after he failed to register his information with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office as required by law.

The original charge Mr. Reaves was convicted and served time for was child molestation. Under state law, once a sex offender is released from prison he or she is required to register with the local sheriff’s office and then re-register each year on their birthday, or anytime they change their place of residence or employment.

A new law took effect July 1, which requires convicted sex offenders to register within 72 hours of their birth date. However, Mr. Reaves’ case fell under the old law which allowed the sex offender a 10 day grace period after their birth day for registration.

Mr. Reaves was scheduled to register on June 17, therefore his grace period expired on June 27. After this date, investigators from the JCSO visited his residence of record only to find he was no longer there. Also, they checked with the Georgia Crime Information Center and found that he had not registered with another sheriff’s office, nor had he registered out of state.

Consequently, an arrest warrant was issued for Mr. Reaves charging him with failing to register as a sex offender, a felony. Mr. Reaves was picked up Tuesday evening in DeKalb County.
