Morgan County Heads to Playoffs

The Georgia High School state baseball tournament got under way last Saturday, beginning with double-header elimination games, and the Morgan County Bulldogs, the number 2 seed from Region 7AA, in which the ‘Canes finished with a 5-10 record, was the only team in the region to survive.

The Bulldogs from Madison, took on the Providence Christian Stars of Lilburn, the number 3 seed out of Region 8AA, who ended the season with a region record of 14-4 and an overall record of 10-10.

The Bulldogs dropped the first game 2-0, but bounced back to win the rubber game 6-4, and forced the series into a third game, which they hung on to win a 12-11, allowing them to advance.

Last night the Bulldogs moved on to face the Holy Innocent Golden Bears of Atlanta, the number 5 seed in Region 5AA, with a region record of 13-3, and an overall record of 22-5.

The other 3 playoff teams from Region 7AA didn’t fare so well.

Westside Augusta, the number 1 seed from the region was eliminated by Greater Atlanta Christian, the number 4 seed from Region 8AA, by scores of 4-3 and 15-2.

Oglethorpe, the number 3 seed suffered the same fate at the hands of Wesleyan, the number 2 seed from Region 8AA, by scores of 9-0 and 6-2.

North Oconee, the number 4 seed from the region was dominated by Buford, the number 1 seed in Region 8AA, by the scores of 14-4 and 28-3.

Of further interest, the Jackson Red Devils were eliminated in the first round by Metter, by scores of 8-4 and 9-0.

In addition, in Region 7A, in which the ‘Canes will compete next year, the top 4 play off teams were Aquinas, Washington-Wilkes, Lincoln County, and GMC, all of which were eliminated in the first round.
