Chris Jenkins Promoted To Cane Baseball Head Coach

One thing is for sure, the boys of summer always begin gathering toward the end of winter. And that was the case on Friday, Jan. 10, when the Hurricane varsity, junior varsity, and middle school baseball aspirants took to the practice field.

Athletic Director Doug Huff has promoted Coach Chris Jenklins from assistant varsity and head coach of the jr. varsity, to head coach of the varsity baseball team. Coach Jenkins, a graduate of the University of Georgia is in his third year at Jasper County High School. He teaches health and physical education for grades nine though 12, and he and his family are residents of Jasper County.

“Promoting Coach Jenkins to replace myself as head baseball coach is something I’ve had in mind since becoming head football coach,” Coach Huff said.

“I feel coach Jenkins can take over that job and that’s what he’s doing. This is his third year here and his second year as assistant coach for the varsity. I’m certainly glad to have him and the boys will be fortunate to have him out there.”
Coach Brook Adams has also been promoted from assistant Jr. varsity coach, to head coach of the Jr. varsity, and assistant varsity coach. Coach Adams teaches physical education at Jasper County Elementary School.

New Head Coach Jenkins talked about his team on Friday. “We’re still going to be a young team, but we’ll have a little more experience than we had last year.

“We have Brian Anderson and Matt Hyde, both seniors, returning this year. Returning juniors are Mark Pierce, Alex Jordan, and Lee Bailey. Lee started as a freshman, and Mark and Alex saw considerable playing time last year. Returning sophomores are J.C. Dunagan, Caleb Reynolds, and J.R. Beasley.

“Pitching will be an area of concern for us because we only have Brian Anderson and J. C. Dunagan returning from last year. This is a position where we’ll have to pull someone out of the woodwork or out of a hat.”

The first game for the Varsity ‘Canes is set for Tuesday, Feb. 28, at home vs. Baldwin County. A complete schedule is scheduled for publication next week in The News.
