Walker Thomas
Funeral services for Walker Thomas were held Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Griggs Chapel A.M.E. Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. James McCray officiated.
He died February 4 at Jasper Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Thomas was born June 14, 1929 to the late Richmond Thomas, Sr. and Everlena Lawson Thomas. He was educated in the Putnam County School System as a student of Brown Chapel School. He joined Brown Chapel Baptist Church at an early age.
Mr. Thomas served the U.S. Army from 1950-1954 during the Korean Conflict. While in the Army he learned to operate heavy equipment, a talent he utilized in his civilian life for more than 40 with the Forestry Service.
He married the late Rosa Mae Thomas in 1959. A son, Freddie Collins; stepdaughter, Buella Ammons; three brothers, Millard, Richmond Jr., and Joe Louis Thomas; and a sister, Alma Willis, all preceded him in death.
Survivors include his son, Richard Collins of Decatur; stepson, Bobby Ammons of Hillsboro; six grandchildren, Octavious Collins, Antonio Collins, Delvecchio Collins, Aries Mattox, Tequessa Collins, all of Atlanta, and Gantry Collins of Eatonton; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Mae Ammons, Regina Gotel, and Eunice Smith, all of Monticello; and a number of other relatives and friends.
