Canes Prepare For Final Regular Season Game This Saturday

The Monticello Hurricane varsity squads are preparing for their final game of the season this Saturday on the road at Laney High School in Augusta.

The sprint to the end of the season will determine which seed each team grabs as they enter the region tournament which begins Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Tournament locations are determined each year by seedings. A location for Tuesday and Wednesday action has yet to be determined because several 7AA region teams are currently bunched closely together with two days of regular season region action yet to be completed.

Each year tournament locations alternate between the girls and boys divisions. While the first round of action is hosted by the third seed, the second round is hosted by the first seed. If it’s the boys year, next Friday and Saturday action will definitely be in Greene County. If it’s the girls year, fans should look to head to Laney in Augusta again next weekend.

A meeting of the Region 7AA coaches is scheduled for this Saturday at 10 a.m. in Greene County. Details for the upcoming region play-offs will be determined and disclosed at that time.
Double losses for both squads last weekend doesn’t help their record with regard to the region tournament.

The three-hour road trip to Josey in Augusta last Friday led to Hurricane losses. The Lady Canes were defeated 46-37. Jasmine Pennamon led the scoring with 15 points; Shondra Williams and Waveka Bledsoe had 6 points each; Dominique Redd, 5; Brittany Standifer and Shaquala Thurman, 2 points each; and Shawanna Sands, 1.

Saturday night’s competition which resulted in a 53-50 loss to Greene County was a real disappointment to the team and fans alike. The ladies let a three quarter lead slip away in the final minutes of the game while missing three key opportunities to tie the game and send it into overtime. That’s saying nothing of the poor free throw shooting, making only 8-of-21 shots from the line.

Shondra Williams and Jasmine Pennamon led the scoring with 11 points each; Standifer had 10; Redd, 6; Sands, Bledsoe, and Thurman, 4 points each.

Both Cane losses almost produced mirror scores—they loss 80-56 to Josey and 79-56 to Greene.
Against Josey Coddy Carter led the scoring with 14 points; Nick Standifer, 11; Markese Thurman, 10; Brannon Hamm, 8; Octavious Epps and Alton Standifer, 6 points each; and Josh Thompson, 1.
Nick Standifer led the scoring against Greene with 15 points; Thurman had 13; Hamm, 10; Carter, 8; James Lawrence, 4; Epps, 3; A. Standifer, 2; and Lance Dennis, 1.
